It’s time for another Traditions Tuesday! The garter toss is similar to the bouquet toss – whoever catches the garter will be the next man to be married. It is also one of the oldest customs.
There are a couple of traditions associated with the meaning of the garter. First, there was a superstition that owning a piece of the wedding dress would bring good luck. Many times this led to the bride being attacked to rip off a piece of her gown. To prevent this from continuing, the garter was implemented to be the piece of her attire that would bring good fortune.
The garter was also a sign that the marriage had been consummated. Witnesses at the marriage bed would show it off as a sign after the witnessing. Privacy came into play and the tradition of being a witness was eliminated. The tradition morphed into the bride having the groom throw it to prove consummation.
